I came onto the Internet a novice and got involved with social media in an effort to stay connected to the kids in my life. I had to learn the hard way that not everything on the Internet is true, much is plagiarized, and a lot can just disappear at a moment's notice. I was never put in Facebook Prison, but I know many who were. Most of them were just posting or reposting articles that were not favorable to Obama or Hillary. I learned what my purpose was and I came to Facebook every day to fulfill that purpose. Do I understand Snapchat or the power of Instagram or how to market via Pinterest? No. Do I believe everyone should have an interest in politics? In some ways, yes. What our government does is supposed to be what the people want, not what the politicians want, so we have an obligation as Americans to know what they're doing, which is almost always the opposite of what they say they'll do. Facebook became my pulpit, my journal, my activist outlet. My notes on Facebook ranged from political to Christmas stories to history and rants. Facebook friends grew to the maximum, and together we did what we had to do. Many had never been on Facebook before 2008, most had never been involved with politics, and many spent eight years learning the Internet, Facebook, and who they were. I don't trust the media in any way anymore, but Facebook got me through the Obama years. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Elisabeth Cossi. Facebook's founding is legend: In a Harvard dorm, wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg invented a new way to connect with friends...and the rest is history. But for the people who actually molded this great idea into a game-changing $300 billion company, the experience was far more tumultuous and uncertain than we might expect. Mike Hoefflinger was one of those Facebook insiders. As a computer engineer turned marketing innovator who worked with COO Sheryl Sandberg, Hoefflinger had a front-row seat to the company's growing pains, stumbles, and reinventions. Becoming Facebook tells the coming-of-age story of the now venerable giant. Filled with insights and anecdotes from crises averted and challenges solved, the book tracks the company's development, uncovering lessons learned on its way to greatness: How Facebook recovered from its "disastrous" IPO How the growth team achieved the impossible Why Facebook's News Feed ads were the company's most important business decision ever How Google+ attacked and lost Why - and how - Instagram and WhatsApp were added to the mix What the company does to win the talent wars What makes Zuckerberg, Sandberg, Cox, and other A-teamers tick Which products and technical advancements are on the horizon and why And much more Intimate, fast paced, and deeply informative, Becoming Facebook shares the true story of how Zuckerberg joined the ranks of iconic CEOs like Steve Jobs, Larry Page, and Jeff Bezos - as Facebook grows up, overcomes setbacks, and works to connect the world. An award-winning Financial Times columnist exposes the threat that Big Tech poses to our democracies, our economies and ourselvesToday Google and Facebook receive 90% of the world's news ad-spending. Amazon takes half of all ecommerce in the US. Google and Apple operating systems run on all but 1% of cell phones globally. And 80% of corporate wealth is now held by 10% of companies - not the GEs and Toyotas of this world, but the digital titans. How did we get here? How did the tech industry get to dominate our world so completely? How did once-idealistic and innovative companies come to manipulate elections, violate our privacy, and pose a threat to the fabric of our democracy? In Don't Be Evil, Financial Times global business columnist Rana Foroohar documents how Big Tech lost its soul - and became the new Wall Street.Through her skilled reporting and unparalleled access - won through nearly 30 years covering business and technology - she shows the true extent to which the 'Faang's (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google) crush or absorb any potential competitors, hijack our personal data and mental space and offshore their exorbitant profits. What's more, she reveals how these threats to our democracies, our livelihoods and our minds are all intertwined. Yet Foroohar also lays out a plan for how we can resist, creating a framework that fosters innovation while also protecting us from the dark side of digital technology.
