Mark Zuckerberg is an American computer programmer and Internet entrepreneur. He is a co-founder of Facebook, and currently operates as its chairman and chief executive officer. His net worth is estimated to be 71.5 billion dollars as of September 2017, and he is ranked by Forbes as the fifth richest person in the world. Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard University dormitory room on February 4, 2004. He was assisted by his college roommates and fellow Harvard students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The group then introduced Facebook to other college campuses. Facebook expanded rapidly, reaching one billion users by 2012. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg was involved in various legal disputes brought by others in the group, who claimed a share of the company based upon their involvement during the development phase of Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg has a success story so great that most people could only wish for a tenth of what he´s managed to accomplish. Despite all of his success, he comes from a modest background and normal parents. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sam Slydell. Mark Zuckerberg, the 28-year-old founder of Facebook, is not only the youngest self-made billionaire in history, he was worth $19.1 billion right after Facebook´s initial public offering. Although his meteoric rise had lost some of its luster after the IPO, he is now considered by many to be one of the most influential persons in the information age. His impact on American culture is virtually unprecedented. And the company he controls so carefully, Facebook, has become a major social, commercial, and advertising international force. The 2010 film, Social Network did not portray him in the kindest light, but was it a work of fact or fiction? Separating fiction from fact, award-winning author Daniel Alef, tells the true story of Zuckerberg´s meteoric rise and his indelible mark on the evolution of American culture through social networking and now advertising. The curly-haired wunderkind rubs elbows with Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Graham, and other prominent players in today´s business, technological, and media world and is an emerging philanthropist. 1. I came onto the Internet a novice and got involved with social media in an effort to stay connected to the kids in my life. I had to learn the hard way that not everything on the Internet is true, much is plagiarized, and a lot can just disappear at a moment´s notice. I was never put in Facebook Prison, but I know many who were. Most of them were just posting or reposting articles that were not favorable to Obama or Hillary. I learned what my purpose was and I came to Facebook every day to fulfill that purpose. Do I understand Snapchat or the power of Instagram or how to market via Pinterest? No. Do I believe everyone should have an interest in politics? In some ways, yes. What our government does is supposed to be what the people want, not what the politicians want, so we have an obligation as Americans to know what they´re doing, which is almost always the opposite of what they say they´ll do. Facebook became my pulpit, my journal, my activist outlet. My notes on Facebook ranged from political to Christmas stories to history and rants. Facebook friends grew to the maximum, and together we did what we had to do. Many had never been on Facebook before 2008, most had never been involved with politics, and many spent eight years learning the Internet, Facebook, and who they were. I don´t trust the media in any way anymore, but Facebook got me through the Obama years. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Elisabeth Cossi. Move Fast and Break Things tells the story of how a small group of libertarian entrepreneurs began in the 1990s to hijack the original decentralized vision of the Internet, in the process creating three monopoly firms - Facebook, Amazon, and Google - that now determine the future of the music, film, television, publishing, and news industries. Taplin offers a succinct and powerful history of how online life began to be shaped around the values of the men who founded these companies, including Peter Thiel and Larry Page: tolerating piracy of books, music and film while at the same time promoting opaque business practices and subordinating privacy of individual users to create the surveillance marketing monoculture in which we now live. The enormous profits that have come with this concentration of power tell their own story. Since 2001, newspaper and music revenues have fallen by 70 percent; book publishing, film, and television profits have also fallen dramatically. Revenues at Google in this same period grew from $400 million to $74.5 billion. Google´s YouTube today controls 60 percent of the streaming audio business and pays only 11 percent of the streaming audio revenues. More creative content is being consumed than ever before, but less revenue is flowing to creators and owners of the content. With the reallocation of money to monopoly platforms comes a shift in power. Google, Facebook, and Amazon now enjoy political power on par with Big Oil and Big Pharma, which in part explains how such a tremendous shift in revenues from artists to platforms could have been achieved and why it has gone unchallenged for so long. The stakes in this story go far beyond the livelihood of any one musician or journalist. As Taplin observes, the fact that more and more Americans receive their news, music, and other forms of entertainment from a small group of companies poses a real threat to democracy.
