Today on To the Best of Our Knowledge, "Protest 2.0": how open-source protesting is changing the world. First, a little theoretical overview. How exactly does social media allow someone in say, Tunis, to overthrow their government? Jim Fleming talks to Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing without Organizations. V for Vendetta is the film for the Internet's Anonymous movement. They're the hackers who brought down the sites of MasterCard, PayPal and Visa after they shut off donations to Wikileaks. Gregg Housh tells Steve Paulson about Anonymous. Steve wanted to know how Gregg could be the spokesperson for an anonymous organization. To the Best of Our Knowledge is produced in Madison, Wisconsin, which recently saw this new type of leaderless social-media revolution in full bloom. It was in response to Governor Scott Walker announcing his controversial "budget repair bill" that would strip the collective bargaining rights of state employees. One of the sleep-in activists at the State Capitol was writer and blogger Christie Taylor. She kept a diary of her experiences…. The Arab Spring caught a lot of people by surprise, but not a group called Global Voices. It's made up of more than 300 bloggers and translators around the world who are closely watching Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and blogs - ready to report when ordinary people become citizen journalists, as they did throughout the events of the Arab Spring. Ivan Sigal, Global Voices' Executive Director, tells Anne Strainchamps about it. All eyes have been on the Middle East for some months now. But al Qaeda has been conspicuous for its absence. Many have declared al Qaeda and other Muslim extremist groups irrelevant with regards to the Arab Spring. Irrelevant? Anne Strainchamps posed that question to Romesh Ratnesar, contributing editor-at-large at Time magazine. [Broadcast Date: May 11, 2011] 1. Language: English. We all know bad manners when we see them, NPR and Vanity Fair contributor Henry Alford observes at the beginning of his new book. But what, he asks, do good manners look like in our day and age? When someone answers their cell phone in the middle of dining with you, or runs you off the sidewalk with their doublewide stroller, or you enter a postapocalyptic public restroom, the long-revered wisdom of Emily Post can seem downright prehistoric. Troubled by the absence of good manners in his day-to-day life by the people who clip their toenails on the subway or give three-letter replies to one's laboriously crafted missives, Alford embarks on a journey to find out how things might look if people were on their best behavior a tad more often. He travels to Japan (the "Fort Knox Reserve" of good manners) to observe its culture of collective politesse. He interviews etiquette experts both likely (Judith Martin, Tim Gunn) and unlikely (a former prisoner, an Army sergeant). He plays a game called Touch the Waiter. And he volunteers himself as a tour guide to foreigners visiting New York City in order to do ground-level reconnaissance on cultural manners divides. Along the way (in typical Alford style) he also finds time to teach Miss Manners how to steal a cab; designates the World's Most Annoying Bride; and tosses his own hat into the ring, volunteering as an online etiquette coach. Ultimately, by tackling the etiquette questions specific to our age - such as "Why shouldn't you ask a cab driver where's he's from?", "Why is posting baby pictures on Facebook a fraught activity?", and "What's the problem with 'No problem'?" - Alford finds a wry and warm way into a subject that has sometimes been seen as pedantic or elitist. And in this way, he looks past the standard "do's" and "don'ts" of good form to present an illuminating, seriously entertaining book about grace and civility, and how we can simply treat each other better./ 1. A few weeks after finishing their final exams, high school sweethearts have an argument at a party. Joe wants to go - Jen begs him to stay. They fight in the corridor, following their usual script, and then he walks out and leaves her. A few hours later she dies. Three years on, after burning up his own dreams for the future, Joe is working in dead-end jobs and mentoring a wayward teenager not dissimilar from his younger self. Driven by the need to make good, he spends all his spare time doing parkour - l'art du deplacement - under an inner-city bridge, training his mind and body to conquer the hostile urban environment that took his love and blighted his future. Somewhere else, a middle-aged woman, Elise, is treading water in her life as her marriage breaks up. We watch as she retreats to the only place that holds any meaning for her - the tiger enclosure at Melbourne Zoo, where, for reasons she barely understands, she starts painting the tigers and forms a close connection to them. Joe is broken by grief, but the outside world won't let him hide forever. A cool and bewitching girl turns up on the doorstep of his share house, somehow painfully familiar to him. Then there is the skateboarding chef at the bar where he works, the girl with the Cossack-blue eyes, who wants to be his friend. And someone going by the Facebook tag Emily Dickinson wants to reminisce about his dead girlfriend and won't leave him alone. Can Joe staunch the flooding return of desire - or is it time to let go of the past? And will he make the nine-foot leap from girder to pillar, or does he want to fall, too? While at its heart is a searing absence, Leap is driven by an unstoppable and exhilarating life force and the eternally hopeful promise of redemptive love. Funny, moving, quirky and original, Leap is an effortlessly enjoyable listen that quietly creeps up on you until its final jaw-dropping moments and 1. Language: English. Narrator: Samuel Johnson. Have we entered the gloaming of the cinematic age? Have Youtube and Facebook driven the final nails in the coffin (first built by television) of the projector and the screen? If so, what ghosts linger in the lobbies, tear the tickets, change the reels? Tsai Ming-liang''s film "Goodbye Dragon Inn" bears witness to this haunting, and within it lies a deep allegory of our own relationship to the movies we watch, how they become us, and we become them. In a time of seemingly infinite media, what portals open when we turn our back on the bright lights, and look to the quiet, the dark, the empty, the absent? Part film history, part textual analysis, and part literary theory, "Cinematic Absence" imagines what might be interpreted from the 2003 masterpiece, and what is at stake in said interpretation, both for audience and auteur.

How do we communicate in the real and in the virtual world? Do we really communicate what we mean? By refusing to communicate, what do we say? Are we different in the real and in the virtual space? Who is Who in Life and on Facebook, the first ever written book on the subject, has some answers to these questions. Based on the body psychotherapy theory and on the author s experience both as a body psychotherapist and as an active Facebook user, the book focuses on the five Neo-Reichian characters verbal and non-verbal behaviors in real life and on Facebook. Despite the existing belief that we can hide in the virtual space because of the absence of a live contact, the author examines the way our masks fall and how everything, which we upload, post, like, or share on the web, exposes our real characters - our fears, limits, illusions, lacking behaviors, etc. Written in a simple language, the book can be useful for psychotherapists, counselors, psychology students and people who are interested in their own and other people s communication and behavior in real life and on Facebook.

After Eric Davis spent over 16 years in the military, including a decade in the SEAL Teams, his family was more than used to his absence on deployments and secret missions that could obscure his whereabouts for months at a time. Without a father figure in his own life since the age of fifteen, Eric was desperate to maintain the bonds he'd fought so hard to forge when his children were young-particularly with his son, Jason, because he knew how difficult it was to face the challenge of becoming a man on one's own. Unfortunately, Eric learned the hard way that Quality Time doesn't always show up in Quantity Time. Facebook, television, phones, video games, school, jobs, friends-they all got in the way of a real, meaningful father-son relationship. It was time to take action. As a SEAL, Eric learned to innovate and push boundaries, allowing him to function at levels beyond what was expected, comfortable, ordinary, and even imaginable, and he knew that as a father he needed to do the same with his son. Meeting extreme with extreme was the only answer. Using a unique blend of discipline, leadership, adventure, and grace, Eric and his SEAL brothers will teach you how to connect, and reconnect, with your sons and learn how to raise real men-the Navy SEAL way.
