KakaoTalk and Facebook: Korean American Youth Constructing Hybrid Identities explores the role smartphones play in the lives of Korean American youth as they explore their identities and navigate between fitting into their host society and their Korean heritage. Employing multiple methodologies, this book gives voice to the youth's personal experiences, identity struggles, and creative digital media practices. While similar in many aspects to other American youth, they also differ greatly in the central roles that their smartphones' use plays in maintaining their mastery of the Korean language, connecting to Korean pop culture, and cultivating their social networks with other co-ethnic peers and homeland relatives and friends. The results of this study challenge traditional assumptions about assimilation of second generation immigrants into a host society and suggest that digital technologies facilitate the process of segmented assimilation, according to which ethnic identities continue to play a central role in the identity of children of immigrants. KakaoTalk and Facebook will be of great interest to scholars and educators of media and youth and those exploring how digital media have changed the nature of immigration processes in dramatic ways.

The spies had come without warning. They plied their craft silently, stealing secrets from the world's most powerful military. They were at work months before anyone noticed their presence. And when American officials finally detected the thieves, they saw it was too late. The damage was done . . .It could have been the plot of a Tom Clancy thriller: Chinese hackers break into American defence contractors and steal the plans for a new multi-billion dollar fighter jet. In fact, it is just one dispatch from the frontline of a new form of warfare. Our wars are increasingly being fought online. GCHQ and the NSA gather vast amounts of information from the internet - and do so with the complicity of companies like Google and Facebook. The American military fields teams of hackers who can, and do, launch computer virus attacks against enemy targets. And with the majority of civil infrastructure - things like nuclear power stations, hospitals, airports and banking systems - now run across the internet, the next 9/11 could be a cyber-attack.Welcome to the modern world of warfare.

New Media and Democracy: Nigeria's President an...

This book is designed to make voters, politicians, journalists, media trainers and communication scholars embrace the emergence of new media as they affect public consciousness in urban Nigeria - how they drive civic activism as well as inspire political discourse. It traces the use of new media technology with a deliberate focus on Facebook, an American online platform that is said to have more than 600 million subscribers and made available in many languages across the world with millions of Nigerians socialising and networking on it. It shows how Nigeria's 14th President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, positioned himself and his 2011 presidential campaign as being very modern and ICT-relevant, and how he gained more Facebook fans and followers than the combined tally of British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and South African President Jacob Zuma, placing second only behind America's President Barack Obama. Hamilton and Daramola's findings, analyses, literature review, theoretical framework and methodology shed more light on how the effective use of new media will shape the future of electioneering in Africa's most populous country, Nigeria.

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes makes the case that one percenters like him should pay their fortune forward in a radically simple way: a guaranteed income for working peopleThe first half of Chris Hughes' life followed the perfect arc of the American Dream. He grew up in a small town in North Carolina. His parents were people of modest means, but he was accepted into an elite boarding school and then Harvard, both on a scholarship. There, he met Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz and became one of the co-founders of Facebook. In telling his story, Hughes demonstrates the powerful role fortune and luck play in today's economy. Through the rocket-ship rise of Facebook, Hughes came to understand how a select few can become ultra-wealthy nearly overnight. He believes the same forces that made Facebook possible have made it harder for everyone else in America to make ends meet.To help people who are struggling, Hughes proposes a simple, bold solution: a guaranteed income for working people, including unpaid caregivers and students, paid for by the one percent. Hughes believes that a guaranteed income is the most powerful tool we have to combat poverty. Money - cold hard cash with no strings attached - gives people freedom, dignity and the ability to climb the economic ladder.A guaranteed income for working people is the big idea that's missing. This book, grounded in Hughes' personal experience, will start a frank conversation about how we earn, how we can combat income inequality, and ultimately, how we can give everyone a fair shot.
